The tornado hit Gaylord, a community of nearly 4,200 people about 230 miles northwest of Detroit. Michigan State Police announced the one-night stay and asked residents to hide in the area on Friday night. Governor Gretchen Whitmer has declared a state of emergency in Otsego County.
Brian Lawson, a spokesman for Munson Healthcare, said Gaylord-Otsego Memorial Hospital injured 23 people and one died. He did not know the condition of the wounded or the name of the deceased. Lawson said the flow of people brought to the hospital slowed on Friday night.

"My heart goes out to the families and small businesses impacted by the tornado and severe weather in Gaylord," Governor Gretchen Whitmer wrote on Twitter. "To the entire Gaylord community—Michigan is with you. We will do what it takes to rebuild."
